SYL asked to be released while undergoing a trial held at the Corruption Crime Court (Tipikor) at the Central Jakarta District Court, Jakarta.

"I ask Your Excellency the Panel of Judges, with the permission of Allah SWT and based on conscience, to decide for me a verdict of acquittal or a verdict that is as fair as possible," said SYL in the trial at the Central Jakarta District Court.

SYL emphasized that he was not a criminal or extortionist as charged by the Public Prosecutor (JPU) of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK). 

"Your Honorable Panel of Judges, I am not a criminal, let alone an extortionist. I am not a traitor, but I am a fighter," said SYL.

SYL also explained that his subordinates always stated that their acceptance was the right of a minister.

"The typical words that I always remember are, 'This has been accounted for, sir. This is the minister's right, sir'," he said.
