Creatinine is a waste product produced by human muscles that is usually excreted through the kidneys.
Healthy kidneys filter creatinine from your blood, and it leaves the body in urine.
Your doctor can measure the amount of creatinine in your blood and urine to find out how well your kidneys are working. This measurement is called creatinine clearance.
Having high creatinine levels may not be dangerous, although it can be a marker of other health conditions, including chronic kidney disease (CKD).
A serum creatinine blood test, along with factors such as age, weight, and medical history, can help your doctor understand how well your kidneys are functioning and whether there may be a problem.
What is included in a creatinine level test?
Sometimes creatinine levels are tested over a 24-hour period.
You will be asked to collect all your urine during that time period and take it to your doctor.
The laboratory will test the amount of creatinine in your urine, then compare it to the amount of creatinine in your blood.
